Super simple mod that does not ruin aesthetics of Legion Go!
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Precision Screwdriver Set
- Plastic pry tool
- Dremel or any alternative
- (Optional) Replacement fan for 8APU1
INSTRUCTIONS:
First of all you need to extract fan from LeGo, carefully un-glue tape on top of fins and get fan out.
Carefully extract wire from plastic holder on fan.
After that use Dremel to cut hole that starts around that plastic holder and ends 14mm before exhaust. Height of the hole ends around plastic holder for wire, use this picture for reference:
After cutting remove sharp edges and material leftovers with office knife.
Test results:
Shadow of tomb raider static test
fan without mods:
POW CPU SOC VR SSD FAN
30W 76C 79C 87C 75C 6600RPM
modded fan:
POW CPU SOC VR SSD FAN
30W 71C 73C 77C 72C 6534RPM
Minus 10 degrees from voltage regulator just by blowing air!
Note that there are few fan models available, bottom one is new with maximum 7400RPM and top one is 6600RPM. Also stock anti-whistle tape may significantly decrease airflow, personally i had to change it with smaller tape glued to the plastic casing and tests were performed without tape.
Copper mods
If you have installed vertical 2280 SSD highly recommend to order 0.1mm copper tape with black painting (for increased IR heat dissipation), with it i was able to get SSD temps down to 67C at same setup (-5C), make sure that SSD have some isolation over components or use high temperature tape.
If you’re brave enough it is possible to add 0.5mm thick copper plate and additional fins at air vent:
Length of copper plate is 50mm, but better to get 55mm for extra heatsink on top of left inductor. Thermal pad for inductor is 0.6~0.8mm thick. Copper cuts follows speaker shape that is sitting on top of it. Copper fins are 5.5mm height, but, sadly, i could only find those on taobao.
Soldered fins together with copper plate (used speaker for reference).
Add pad and paste on top of VR area.
Assemble everything together, and add two 7x7x5mm aluminum heatsinks for aligning airflow a bit more to the left. Final result at decreased fan speed:
